About this course

The ATS incident investigation training course is ideally suited to those involved in conducting or reviewing aviation safety investigation and safety management activities. The syllabus provides a solid grounding in contemporary Human Factors issues, and allows participants to develop skills in the use of various relevant investigation techniques and methodologies, including evidence gathering, witness interviewing, assessment of human performance issues, and application of SHEL/O and the Systemic Occurrence Analysis Methodology (SOAM) developed by Dédale for EUROCONTROL.

Course aim
Participants in this course will be provided with an understanding of air traffic control safety occurrence investigation processes and will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to participate in and support formal incident and accident investigations.

Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the trainee will:

  • Describe the domain of human factors
  • Identify human performance limitations that contribute to accidents and incidents
  • Explain how work contexts (task, environmental & people conditions) influence human performance
  • Use SHEL/O as an evidence gathering framework
  • Demonstrate effective interviewing skills to gather data
  • Apply models of human error to investigations
  • Apply the Systemic Occurrence Analysis Methodology (SOAM / Reason Model) to identify organisational factors in occurrence investigation
  • Apply appropriate systemic investigation techniques to analyse contributing factors, present findings and make recommendations
  • Develop effective findings and recommendations for corrective action
